Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (HA)

HA is the lack of a menstrual period for more than six months when all other reasons have been ruled out. This happens as a result of the hypothalamus responding to times of undereating or stress by shutting down ovulation to prevent pregnancy.

Cutting out certain foods groups particularly carbohydrates can send the wrong message to your brain tricking it into thinking you are starving. Stress and high cortisol levels can also make the brain think that it is time for fight or flight.

HA can sometimes be misdiagnosed as PCOS and vice versa. It is important to differentiate between the two as treatment will differ significantly.
