Perimenopause

This topic is close to my heart as it is the stage of life I am currently at and I know that navigating this stage is super had but nevertheless can be done. And I would love to help you navigate it as smoothly as possible!

Perimenopause is a transition period to menopause (a woman’s final period) that typically lasts around 2 to 10 years. It usually starts for a woman in her 40’s and on average in Australia women hit menopause by the age of 52.

Perimenopause has been dubbed a woman’s “second puberty” because like first puberty, premenstrual menstrual symptoms such as heavy periods and mood swings occur!

Hormonal fluctuations start to occur particularly in terms of the ratio of oestrogen to progesterone (the female hormones).

In first puberty, oestrogen levels increase causing them to be much higher than that of progesterone levels and therefore ovulation takes place and menstruation starts.

During perimenopause, progesterone levels drop creating that significant difference in oestrogen to progesterone levels! This also causes the heavy periods and breast pain associated with perimenopause. Eventually, when oestrogen levels drop and stabilise is when menopause takes place and a woman no longer has a period.

Symptoms of perimenopause include:
